Vulnerability scan vs. penetration test: why they are not the same

One of the most frequent questions we get is whether an automated vulnerability scan would be enough. The short answer: a scan shows you possible issues, while a pentest shows you what can actually be exploited and what impact it has.

What a vulnerability scan does

A scan uses automated tools that compare systems against databases of known vulnerabilities and flag everything that might be a problem. The result is usually a long list of findings, some real, others false or irrelevant in your context. A scan does not tell you whether a vulnerability can actually be exploited or what would happen if someone exploited it.

What a penetration test does

Penetration testing is a controlled simulation of a cyberattack. In Dataeye’s methodology, manual testing is the core of the assessment. Automated tools are used to extend coverage and for preliminary identification of certain vulnerabilities, but their results are never reported without verification.

Each reported vulnerability is analysed in context, manually validated and backed by evidence. Where relevant, vulnerabilities are exploited in a controlled manner to confirm their impact and to assess attack scenarios that combine several weaknesses.

A focus on impact

The number of findings is not the goal of the test. We focus on vulnerabilities that can lead to unauthorised access, account compromise, data exposure, disruption of business processes, privilege escalation or lateral movement across the network. A single validated vulnerability with real impact matters more than dozens of theoretical alerts.

What you get from a pentest

  • validated vulnerabilities and technical evidence;
  • the risk level and impact of each finding;
  • prioritised remediation recommendations;
  • a management summary and technical details for IT teams;
  • confirmation of fixes through retesting, if included.

When you need each one

Regular scanning is useful as a cyber hygiene tool. A penetration test is the right choice when you launch applications or APIs, after major changes to your infrastructure, when you have publicly exposed systems or when you need to demonstrate your real level of security to clients, partners or authorities. Not just vulnerabilities. Context.
